The Bar Council’s Bar Representation Committee is currently seeking a chambers professional in a senior role to act as its Joint Vice Chair for a maximum term of three years, starting January 2023.

About the Committee

The Bar Representation Committee holds hybrid meetings four times per annum and works to support the strategic development of the Bar Council’s services, training and events portfolios, the contents of which are designed to meet some of the organisation’s key objectives, including:

  • Supporting barristers, chambers and alternative business models with practice management, in the interest of statutory and regulatory compliance as well as efficiency (e.g. through the Direct Access Portal, our public access training portfolio and ad-hoc events such as ‘Complaints Handling at the Bar’).
  • Providing services, guidance, information and training to maintain and raise professional standards, overcome challenges that hinder practice at the Bar, and promote the wellbeing of individuals (e.g. through the ID Card Access Scheme, our business development and critical skills training portfolios, and the work that we undertake in collaboration with the Education, Diversity and Inclusion, and CSR Policy Teams).
  • Highlighting the opportunities for broadening areas of practice, business, and personal development.
  • Widening career opportunities at the Bar by ensuring aspiring barristers have ready access to information, options and routes into the profession (e.g. through the operation of Pupillage Gateway and the Immigration Support Scheme, the Annual Bar and Young Bar Conference, and the coordination of the Bar Council’s flagship Pupillage Fair).
  • Increasing the financial sustainability and the resilience of the Bar Council (e.g. through business partnerships and the marketing of the Bar Representation Fee).

About the Vacancy

We would like to appoint a chambers professional in a senior role (e.g. a Chief Executive, Chambers Director, Senior Clerk or otherwise) to act as Joint Vice Chair to the Bar Council’s Bar Representation Committee, for a maximum period of three years starting January 2023. Applicants interested in the position should be able to demonstrate some experience of chairing a committee or similar group of persons, although this need not be in chambers, or within the applicant’s place of work.

How to apply

Applicants should send a copy of their CV accompanied by a short written statement of no more than 200 words setting out their suitability for the role and describing their skills and experience to the Bar Council’s Director of Services, Carolyn Entwistle, at CEntwistle@BarCouncil.org.uk. The deadline for applications is 10:00 on Wednesday 16 November 2022.

If you are interested in the role and would like to have an informal discussion about it before making your application, please contact Carolyn at the address listed above.
