Our Client, Matrix Chambers is a leading set of Barristers’ Chambers in Gray’s Inn, London. Reporting to the Head of Finance, Chambers is seeking to recruit a Fees Manager.

The successful candidate will ensure the smooth and effective management of their Fees Team, report directly to the Head of Finance and work alongside heads of other functions and the CEO, as well as working closely with members and clients.

The Role


  • Fees collection – carrying out appropriate and timely fees collection to reach annual target.
  • Billing – processing details of work done by barristers onto a bespoke fees system, rendering fee notes and invoices including billing sensitive and often high profile cases.
  • Taxation and appeals – administrating taxation matters and appeal procedures.
  • Queries & service – dealing with both routine and complicated queries regarding fees and payments. Providing an overall excellent standard of service to members and their professional clients.
  • Member payments – managing the bank accounts used for receiving Barrister fees, including processing member fee payments.
  • Updates – keeping abreast of all developments and updates in fees in the legal industry.
  • Line management – line managing the Fees Team on a day-to-day basis.
  • Reporting – reporting to the Head of Finance on a regular basis, and to the CEO on a monthly basis.
  • Staff Team meetings – participate and contribute in meetings of the Staff Team.

Person Specification

This role would suit an experienced and confident fees professional, who is capable of being an influential and empathetic manager. Ideally, candidates will have experience of fees collection and billing in high-profile cases in a range of areas of law, however, there will be training opportunities for the right candidate if not already familiar with the processes in a barrister organisation.

The successful candidate will exhibit the following characteristics:

  • A calm pragmatic approach under pressure allied with the ability to prioritise and manage
  • A careful, organised and conscientious approach with strong numeracy experience and attention to detail
  • A flexible and co-operative attitude
  • At least four years’ previous experience in a similar role in a legal or professional services environment (essential)
  • At least two years line management experience (desirable)
