Head of Operations and Human Resources -  Leading Barristers Chambers (London)

Our Client is a leading Barristers’ Chambers working across national and international markets. Members specialise in and are instructed in many of the most high-profile cases in each of its specialist areas of practice, criminal defence, family law, housing, immigration and public law. Chambers and its Members have a strong commitment to human rights, social justice and equality.

Chambers now seeks to appoint a highly suitable individual to the role of Head of Operations and Human Resources.

Reporting to the Chambers Director and working closely with Chambers’ Management Board, you will have overall responsibility for managing all aspects of Chambers’ operations, including Human Resources and Facilities, including the maintenance of Chambers’ buildings, (but excluding Finance).

The Role

Human Resources: Ensure staff and members handbooks are fully compliant; ensure chambers’ HR records and policies are up to date; administer staff records including recruitment, job descriptions and holiday records, ensuring compliance with relevant legislation, manage disciplinary processes, manage maintenance of Chambers’ insurance policies/certificates; Bar Mutual and Data Protection cover Administer members’ recruitment procedure.

Facilities and Supplies: Lead reception, Housekeeping and Facilities functions; maintenance of appearance and functionality of all premises; procurement of all office equipment, negotiation of contracts; health and safety requirements; manage refurbishment/repair projects; preparation of annual budget and monitoring of expenditure.

Pupillage: Oversee the administration of pupillage, assign the relevant supervisors to all pupils, manage files and records of current pupils, organise pupillage open day and manage budget for pupillage.

Chambers Governance and Compliance: Work with the BSB and other regulatory bodies to ensure Chambers is compliant; administer Board meetings, Tenancy Committee and Pupillage Committee meetings, obtaining information for the meetings and distributing relevant papers and ensuring follow up actions from the meetings are taken.

The Person

  • Be educated to degree level or hold an equivalent vocational qualification in HR or other relevant field; and be able to demonstrate relevant equivalent experience.
  • Possess demonstrable track record of successfully working and managing in a legal, professional services or similar environment with experience relevant to the functions required.
  • Have strong interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate with and influence others effectively at all levels.
  • Possess a record of effective day to day and project-based delivery within previous roles.
  • Be innovative, flexible, and able to manage and deliver a diverse workload to time and beyond expectations.
  • Be committed to Chambers’ core values of equality, diversity and inclusion.

The position is offered with a salary package, including excellent benefits, commensurate with the seniority of the role.
