Job Purpose:

To manage effectively the marketing and events functions of Chambers, delivering both strategic and tactical objectives.

About us:

Doughty Street Chambers is a multi-disciplinary set of barristers with a truly national and international reputation for excellence, particularly for work involving issues of human rights and civil liberties.  Our team comprises over 150 barristers, many of whom are recognised by the industry directories as leaders in their fields, supported by around 40 staff.  We have offices in London, Manchester, Bristol and The Hague, but our barristers work internationally, undertaking cases on behalf of individuals and companies in proceedings before the UK Courts, the European Court of Human Rights, almost all the international tribunals, overseas courts, and arbitration tribunals.  As well as litigation work our members train judges, prosecutors and security forces around the world, as well as advising on policy work.

To promote the interesting and varied work our members undertake, we have been re-shaping our Business Development and Marketing functions.  The team now comprises a Business Development Director, a marketing executive, and a newly recruited Business Development Manager for our Manchester office who is promoting Chambers to clients in that area of the country.  We are about to launch a new website and brand, and have newly refurbished public & events spaces in our historic premises in the heart of Bloomsbury.  And we are now recruiting for two new roles, a Business Development Executive, and a Marketing & Events Manager, which have been created to assist with developing strong relationships with new and existing clients, through assisting with our key client programme, and through establishing and delivering a programme of innovative events.

You will be a degree-educated marketer with experience gained from the professional services sector.  CIM qualifications would be advantageous.  You will be able to achieve quick buy-in from barristers and other senior stakeholders using your exceptional communication skills, and you will be happy working under pressure and tight deadlines.

Summary of Role:

Reporting to the Business Development Director, the Marketing & Events Manager is a new role created to help our barristers showcase their expertise both at events onsite, at industry conferences at which they may be speaking, and at events and training delivered at the offices of our clients.

You will also be responsible for the smooth production of new content for our digital channels, and the management of the annual legal directories and awards submissions processes, which will include liaising with external suppliers

You will also line manage a Marketing Executive who will assist with the tasks set out in this job description, and to whom tasks can be deputed as necessary.

Key Responsibilities:

Events

  • Liaising with barristers, clerks, and other staff on planning and executing all major Chambers events, whether in our seminar spaces or at external venues.
  • Sourcing content and production of professional quality marketing collateral for events (e.g. invitations, handouts, team brochures, etc.
  • Supervising the management of RSVPs, and fielding guest and press queries pre-event.
  • Ensuring smooth delivery of events by acting as client host, and briefing staff as necessary in advance.

Content

  • Ensuring website is regularly refreshed, proof reading, and coaching barristers on producing good content (e.g. video, news, thought leadership, etc).
  • Managing the promotion of Chambers and Members through additional digital channels (e.g. e-newsletters and social media).
  • Designing a system which ensures we pro-actively identify and market barristers’ high-profile cases and other work.
  • Managing relationships with key press contacts and where possible creating opportunities for members to provide media comment which can be promoted as content.

Directory & Awards Submissions

  • Co-ordinating an efficient process for collating directory submissions and barrister referee details, and responsibility for their timely delivery to publishers.
  • Co-ordinating and drafting award submissions.
  • Managing external agencies/assistance with these processes.

Person Specification:

Qualifications

Educated to Degree Level; CIM qualification advantageous.

Experience

Professional services marketing experience essential. Previous experience of working in a barristers’ chambers is not a requirement but may be advantageous.

Knowledge

Demonstrable understanding of e-marketing and content marketing techniques. The successful candidate will have to display a sound working knowledge of social media and website operation.

Skills and Competencies

  • Ability to multi-task under pressure and meet tight deadlines.
  • Ability to manage staff effectively.
  • Excellent organisational skills including the ability to manage and prioritise workloads.

Remuneration:                                 c. 30,000 pounds 
Working hours:                                9:00am – 6:00pm, Monday – Friday (40 hours).  These are standard working hours, although some flexibility will be required to manage evening events, with time credited accordingly.
